Does your boiler need servicing?

Before calling a service engineer you should make some basic checks. Use our checklist to guide you through this process. If you still have a concern having carried out these checks contact us to arrange a visit from a service engineer.

Is the electricity supply on? (check the bolier supply switch is lit)
Check the fuse on the boiler supply switch: replace if necessary

Is there gas to the boiler?
No - Try another gas supply in the house (e.g. cooker)
Check that the gas supply valve is turned on.

Combination Boiers: Is the water pressure adequate?
Check the pressure gauge on the front panel shows 1.0-1.5 bar.
If not, turn off the bolier - locate the filling loop tap and top-up to required pressure or call us for help!

If the boiler has a pilot light, is it lit?
No - Refer to manual for lighting procedure. Re-light pilot and observe. (Instructions may be printed on the reverse of the boiler front panel)
Yes, but main burner doesn't light. Check room thermostat and time clock are calling for heat.

Is the pilot light lit but there's no heating or hot water?
Yes - could be due to pump or gas valve failure.

If the boiler has electronic ignition (i.e. no pilot), is a spark present? (use eye-view to check inside boiler)
No. Contact us for service assistance.

Is the boiler particularly noisy?
Yes - could be due to pump failure.
Contact us for service assistance.

Conventional boilers: Is there either hot water or central heating but hot both?
Yes - check the diverter valve is functioning. Refer to manual for location of valve.

Are radiators hot at the bottom but cold at the top?
Yes: This means that they need 'bleeding'.
Click here for instructions on how to bleed a radiator.
Switch off the heating system. Starting at the top of the house, use either a special radiator key or a flat-head screwdriver to gently open the valve which will be located at one end of the top of the radiators. Have an old cloth ready to catch any water drips - the water may be discoloured.

Has any wiring work been carried out in the property?
Check for reverse polarity on the boiler's electricity supply.

Be safe: If you feel tired and experience tightness across the forehead, headaches, weakness, dizziness and nausea when an open-flued appliance is in operation - switch the appliance off and call out an engineer.
